What the numbers mean
- Jitter
- How much your ping bounces around. Even with a good ping, lots of jitter makes calls choppy and games feel uneven. Lower is better. Good: Under 10 ms is very steady. Under 30 ms is fine for video calls.
- Ping
- How long your connection takes to respond, in milliseconds (ms). It’s why a game feels snappy or laggy. Lower is better. Good: Under 30 ms is great for gaming. Under 100 ms is fine for calls and browsing.
- Spikes
- Moments when the connection suddenly got slow, at least twice as slow as usual. A few are normal. Lots of them feel like stutter or lag.
- Failed requests
- Checks that never got an answer. One here and there isn’t a big deal. Several in a row means your connection dropped for a moment.
- ms
- Milliseconds, thousandths of a second. 100 ms is a tenth of a second, about how long a blink takes.
How this test works
We send 30 tiny requests to Cloudflare, about half a second apart, and time each one. Jitter is the average change in time from one request to the next. Slow spikes are listed on their own so you can see what pushed it up.
Jitter usually comes from Wi-Fi interference or other devices using the connection. Testing on a cable with nothing else downloading helps tell which.
